At Element Hardware, we’re passionate about timeless craftsmanship. Every piece of our hand-forged iron hardware—whether it’s a rustic curtain rod, decorative hook, or door pull—is individually made to order, using traditional blacksmithing techniques. These functional accents bring authenticity and character to your space, indoors or out.
To ensure your investment lasts for generations, a little care goes a long way. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your hardware looking and performing beautifully.
1. What Makes Hand-Forged Iron Unique
Unlike mass-produced hardware, every finish we apply at Element Hardware is done entirely by hand, allowing the true character of the forge work to shine through. This handcrafted approach results in rich, artisanal finishes that highlight the unique textures in each piece—details that are absent in factory production. To protect the iron and ensure lasting durability, we seal each piece with three layers of a natural, moisture-wicking hardening wax. This traditional finish not only enhances the depth and patina of the iron, but also provides a resilient barrier against the elements. Additionally, we add a zero VOC undercoat to all high moisture items including towel bars, hooks, bath and outdoor hardware. This undercoat won’t chip or peel, and adds next level protection for direct moisture contact.
Most hardware companies today use synthetic sealants, plating, or paint, which can crack, chip, and wear, and can’t be refinished. You’ll be stuck buying new hardware before you know it. our wax finish is low-maintenance and easy to renew. With occasional touch-ups, your hardware will continue to age gracefully and perform beautifully for generations.
2. Cleaning
Proper cleaning helps prevent buildup of dirt and moisture that can damage the finish. If done correctly, your hardware will stand the test of time.
For Indoor Hardware:
-
Wipe when needed with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then a dry cloth.
- If needed, mild soaps may be used, but this is only recommended if completely necessary.
For Outdoor Hardware:
-
Rinse or wipe with water to remove grime.
-
Use a soft-bristled brush for tough dirt (never steel wool).
-
Dry completely after cleaning.
🛑 Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive pads—they can strip away protective coatings and damage the metal.
3. Reapplying Protective Finishes
Over time, the original wax or oil finish may wear down—especially in coastal or environments with high humidity. We recommend applying a new coat of wax on an as needed basis, or to bring back luster and shine. Typically once per year is more than sufficient.

To Reapply:
-
Apply a thin coat of paste wax with a cloth or latex glove.
-
Let it sit for a 30 minutes, then buff with a clean cloth.
Natural oils like mineral or linseed oil also work well—just wipe on, allow it to absorb, then buff off excess.
