Our 3 Unique Finishes
At Element Hardware, every piece we forge is made to last — and the finish is just as important as the craftsmanship. We currently offer three primary finishes, each with its own character and strengths. Here’s a quick overview:
Oil Blackened (Most Popular)
Our oil blackened finish has a rich depth that goes far beyond plain matte black. Instead of simply coating the surface, we use a process that darkens the steel itself:
-
The steel is cleaned and dipped into an oxide bath.
-
A thin urethane layer seals it in.
-
Two coats of black wax are hand-buffed to a satin sheen.
Because the color penetrates the metal, it resists scratching and chipping far better than paint, powder coat, or plating. The best part? You can maintain the look yourself with wax, keeping your hardware beautiful for decades.
Brushed Steel
Our brushed steel finish highlights the natural character of iron. After wire-brushing the surface, we leave subtle forge marks and variation to give each piece a unique, authentic look. It’s clean, timeless, and full of personality.
Brass Brushed
Our newest finish is truly distinctive. We heat the steel and hand-brush it with brass bristles. The brass bonds to the surface in layers, creating a warm, antique tone that feels both modern and classic. Sealed with urethane and wax, this finish develops beautiful character as it ages.
Why Our Finishes Last Longer
Unlike paint, powder coating, or plating that can chip or flake away, our finishes are designed to be refreshed at home. A quick coat of wax can restore luster and protection — no need for costly refinishing.
Custom Options
Because every order is hand-forged, we can tailor finishes to your preferences. Want oil blackened with warmer brown tones? Brushed steel that leans more pewter gray? Brass that’s shinier or darker antique? We can customize it.
