How to Choose the Right Screw Size and Mount Hardware Correctly

When installing hand-forged hooks, brackets, or other hardware, choosing the right screw size — and mounting it correctly — ensures a secure, long-lasting, and visually appealing installation. This guide explains screw sizes, pilot holes, and the specific tools needed for pyramid-head, acorn-head, and round-head decorative screws.

Understanding Screw Sizes

Decorative screws are often listed as:

  • #6 × 5/8″
  • #6 × 3/4″
  • #7 × 3/4″
  • #8 × 3/4″
  • #8 × 1 1/4″
  • #8 × 1 1/2″
  • #10 × 1″
  • #10 × 2″

Here’s what these numbers mean:

  • # number = screw gauge (thickness)
  • Length = measurement from head to tip

General guideline:

  • Light or thin wood → #6 or #7
  • Medium weight hardware → #8
  • Heavy-duty or structural → #10

Why You Should Drill a Pilot Hole First

Drilling a pilot hole makes installation cleaner, easier, and safer. Pilot holes help prevent wood from splitting, keep screws straight, and ensure a strong, long-lasting hold.

Recommended Pilot Hole Sizes

Screw Gauge Softwood Pilot Hole Hardwood Pilot Hole
#6 3/32″ 5/64″
#8 7/64″ 1/8″
#10 1/8″–3/16″ 9/64″–5/32″

Choose a bit roughly the same thickness as the screw’s inner shaft (not including the threads).

Mounting Pyramid-Head Screws

Pyramid-head screws use a square head and require a proper 8-point socket.

Correct Socket Sizes

  • #6 screw → 1/4″ 8-point socket
  • #8 screw → 5/16″ 8-point socket
  • #10 screw → 11/32″ 8-point socket

An 8-point socket grips all four sides securely and prevents stripping. Drive pyramid screws slowly and with steady pressure to protect the finish.

Mounting Acorn and Round-Head Screws

Acorn-head and round-head screws use a slotted (flathead) drive. Use a flathead screwdriver instead of a drill to avoid slipping, stripping, or scratching the screw’s finish. If a drill must be used, keep the speed very low and stop as soon as the screw seats.

Using Drywall Anchors for Wall-Mounted Hardware

When mounting hand-forged hardware on drywall without hitting a stud, screws alone may not hold securely. In these cases, drywall anchors provide extra support and prevent the hardware from pulling out over time.

Choosing the Right Anchor

  • Plastic expansion anchors – Good for light-duty items like hooks.

  • Metal threaded anchors – Stronger option for heavier hardware like large brackets or towel bars.

  • Toggle bolts – Ideal for very heavy pieces or if you need maximum support in hollow walls.

Installation Tips

  1. Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the anchor’s recommended size.

  2. Insert the anchor until it sits flush with the drywall surface.

  3. Drive the screw into the anchor, following the same guidelines for pyramid, acorn, or round-head screws.

Tip: Always make sure the anchor is rated for the weight of the hardware and the items it will hold. Using the correct anchor ensures your wall-mounted hardware is secure, stable, and long-lasting.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Mark the screw locations while holding the hardware in place.
  2. Choose the correct screw size for the weight and surface.
  3. Drill a pilot hole using the recommended chart.
  4. Drive the screw:
    • Pyramid head → correct 8-point socket
    • Acorn/Round head → flathead screwdriver
  5. Tighten until secure, but don’t overtighten.
  6. Confirm the hardware is flush and solid.
