The Story Behind Element Hardware
Element Hardware (EHF) was founded in 2016 by Nathaniel Winkler, shaped by a hands-on, lifelong journey through craftsmanship, design, and service. Each piece of hand-forged hardware reflects a practical understanding of materials and design, and a steady commitment to quality.
A Foundation in Craft and Design
Nate’s path began in his family’s custom wood shop, working alongside his father and grandfather from a young age. There, he gained a deep appreciation for woodworking and construction, learning the value of detail, durability, and thoughtful design. His grandfather, an architect, also introduced him to design principles that would later influence his work in hardware.
Learning Through Experience
At 19, Nate opened a cafe in Central Oregon, where he learned the ins and outs of running a business and working directly with customers. His time abroad with the Peace Corps in South America and later teaching English in Mongolia broadened his outlook and deepened his understanding of people, adaptability, and communication—skills that remain central to EHF’s customer-focused approach.
After returning to the U.S., Nate spent a decade managing a fine-dining restaurant in Santa Monica. This experience sharpened his sense of quality service, organization, and leadership, laying a strong foundation for his future as a business owner in the design and manufacturing space.
A Return to Hands-On Craftsmanship
Eventually, the desire to create with his hands drew Nate back to the workshop. He began learning the craft of blacksmithing, starting with an old anvil and a few hammers, gradually building his skill through years of practice and dedication. This blend of craftsmanship, design insight, and real-world business experience led to the creation of Element Hardware.
