How to Choose the Right Curtain Rod Size: A Simple Guide

Picking the perfect curtain rod doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Follow these easy steps to find the right size for your space:

1. Measure Your Window Width

Start by measuring the width of your window frame from edge to edge.

2. Determine Bracket Placement and Usable Area

To make your window look larger and allow your curtains to close and open fully, add 4–10 inches on each side of the window measurement. This is called the “curtain stack back.” This is also the location your brackets will be mounted.

Example:
If your window is 60 inches wide, add 5 inches on each side (10 inches total). Your curtain rod should have a usable area (between brackets) of 70″.

3. Consider Finial Length

Curtain rods have two length measurements. The “usable” area between brackets, and total length including finial. Depending on your finial choice, finials will extend 4-6″ on each side of the rod. So a 70″ usable area rod will have a total length of approximately 80″. Ensure you have ample room on each side of the window, especially if the window is near a corner, or any other obstructions. At Element Hardware, order your rods using the usable area measurement, keeping in mind the finished total length will be 4-10″ longer.

4. Consider Rod Placement Height

Mount your rod 4–6 inches above the window frame, or closer to the ceiling for a more dramatic, room-heightening effect.

5. Choose the Right Support

We offer two styles of brackets; curtain (2.5″ projection), and tapestry (.5″ projection). We can also make custom brackets to your specs. Element Hardware’s rods are forged from 5/8″ thick solid iron. These rods can support any drape or curtain type, and don’t require center brackets for usable lengths up to 80″.
